A Story That May Soon Disappear

For generations, moonshine wasn't simply a business in the mountains of North Georgia. It was part of the culture, the economy and the fabric of family life. The men and women who lived it remember:

  • The Moonshine Runs
  • The Cars
  • The Roads
  • The Close Calls
  • The Families
  • The Work
  • The Adventure

And they remember the simple reality that, for many families, moonshine was a way to make a living and put food on the table. For some it was adventure. For others it was survival. For many families it became a story that was passed down but never written down.

Those Stories Deserve To Be

Remembered, Not Judged.

Moonshine Memoirs is being created to make sure they're written down, with the people who lived them telling them in their own words.

A Story Worth Preserving

Moonshine Memoirs is a new podcast and book series created to preserve the firsthand stories of the people who lived Dawson County's moonshine history, and of the family members who knew it up close.

Each founding participant sits down for an intimate, recorded conversation in Dawson County. That one conversation becomes both a professionally produced podcast episode and a professionally written chapter in the inaugural volume of Moonshine Memoirs.

CHAPTER IN HISTORY

From Moonshine to Motorsports

In Dawsonville, moonshine and motorsports grew up together. The cars built to outrun revenuers became faster and faster, and the skills developed on moonshine runs helped give rise to the stock-car racing culture for which Dawsonville became famous.

Dawsonville became known as the "Moonshine Capital of the World." Moonshine Memoirs will preserve the people and stories behind that history, not just the legend

The Story Behind The Series

Created by Dawsonville Author
Tonya (odum) Eberhart

Tonya Eberhart's family story is deeply connected to the moonshine history of this community. Her father was the son of two moonshiners, and Tonya documented his life in her book The Raising of a Rebel: 12 Turning Points From a Child of Alcoholics. She also has multiple family members who have been inducted into the Moonshine Hall of Fame (including her grandfather).

After sharing her father's story, Tonya began hearing from people throughout Dawsonville who recognized their own families and experiences in the book. Those conversations led to a bigger realization: there are many more stories that need to be told before they are lost.

Moonshine Memoirs is her effort to preserve those stories for the families who lived them, and for the generations who will come after them.
